ALL ABOUT FASTING

Not what you think.

Honestly, I never would have imagined myself as a faster. My love for food runs seriously deep.

After considering benefits other than weight loss, I decided it could be helpful to my personal goals.

I grabbed some reading material on the popular temporary lifestyle culture of cleansing. This was about a year ago--- I had some time all to myself, and I was in a mental and physical state where I could FOCUS. The book Yoga Body Cleanse was particularly helpful to me (complete with yummy recipes, affirmations, and meditations). The author convinced me to see what a day of water fasting would do for my inner game.

Sure, why not?

The fasting day was incredible. I was instantly hooked and planning my next fast before the first was even over. Since then, I've done dedicated fasts a few more times. I've chosen to do pure juice cleanses, juice and veggie, veggie, and water fasts. Intermittent fasting can allow your body to cleanse itself more frequently, too. All fasts have their own set of qualities, choosing the right one is up to YOU.

My favorite style has proven to be the water fast. Which is, of course, requires the most mental fortitude.
It's no walk in the park.

My most recent attempt at a 24 hour fast was not that long ago, when I was traveling in Costa Rica. I've compiled some of my writings from that day, the night before, and immediately following.

I'm hoping it will provide you with some insight into why you might want to try a fast. Maybe clear its bad rap among "anti-dieters," a label I am willing don. Concepts like fasting, carbohydrate cycling, and seasonal eating are all lifestyle choices, not diets.

I'm hoping people have generally accepted that the old school, "7-day-bikini-ready" diets are bullshit.

C'mon.

Let's get real, now.

It's not the concepts in some diets that don't work, it's the psychology.

Things you will need

  1. Journal and fancy pens. This is about your inner game; processing, purging, reassessing, and realigning. Some where to record all of this is invaluable.. and should be enjoyable!
  2. Clean water bottle. Duh.
  3. Tons of filtered, high quality water. You can chose to add nice sea salt to give the water more structure, and help heal your gut with pure, natural minerals from the ocean.
  4. A variety of yummy herbal teas. Sipping warm, flavored beverages is such a reprieve during a fast!
  5. Fresh ginger root, lemons/limes, fresh herbs, frozen fruits.
  6. A plan.
  7. A willingness to cultivate mental fortitude, bit by bit.

Pregame.

The night before a fast is crucial to a successful day. After having a light dinner, record the time. If it's 7pm when you finish dinner, your fast will go until 7pm the next day for a full 24 hours.

Brush your teeth after dinner and go to bed early to get a full night of rest.

Get yourself psyched for the next day with some writing. Make lists of areas in your life that will benefit from this transformative process.

Sometimes it can be hard to provoke a deep inquiry by yourself. Answer as many of these as you can. Just do it.

Here are some suggestions:

  • What brings you here? A chain of events, a person, an environment, a goal
  • What do you rely on for comfort? Food, alcohol, drugs, sex, external affirmation, material objects.
  • What experiences do you draw strength from?
  • What qualities do you admire in others? Do you see them in your self?
  • How are you feeling in your physical body?
  • What thoughts are occupying your emotional energy?
  • How could you treat your self better?
  • What self-love activities would you like to do more of?
  • How would you like to behave differently in personal relationships?

EVENING OF OCTOBER 17th, 2016

The never ending cycle of "filling the void" with falsities and more emptiness; material goods, or numbing my natural state of mind will yield no luscious fruit. The best grapes are grown under the most challenging conditions. They have a story to tell.

Kicking reliance on things is an emotionally charged investment that requires the utmost attention.

So, here I am.

Sitting with the nakedness of the present moment. Reveling in the raw beauty of being here.

Tomorrow, I will feel light and rejuvenated.

This is a beautiful time of introspection and identification of patterns.

Look at how brilliant you can shine when unencumbered by smoggy toxic intake, the gunk that allows my world to revolve around consumption!

Start Strong

The morning of a fast, lay in bed for few extra moments.

Begin the day with being present. Remind yourself of your goals for the day.

Place both feet on the floor, feel the ground beneath you.

You already have all that you need~

Begin by drinking a huge glass of warm water.

During the day, you should at least be consuming your body weight, divided by two, in ounces.

For example:

Weight= 160

160/2=80

80oz

Today you will clean your whole body out! Your blood will be refreshed, you muscles rejuvenated, and your brain nourished.

Get creative!

Use the clarity that a fast brings to your advantage. Journal, draw, paint, write, cook, stretch, make lists. Today is YOUR day to reset your body and your mind.

Make a couple jugs of fruit infused water to help the day breeze by. Just plop ingredients into your high quality water and let it infuse for a few hours.

Suggested infusion combos:

  • Ginger discs, mint, lime
  • Strawberry, basil, lemon
  • Blueberry, thyme, orange
  • Tea, avoid caffeine in the afternoon. I love dandelion, milk thistle, and burdock root teas during fasts.

Schedule

Keep yourself busy with appointments, walks, and activities.

Give yourself permission to relax later in the day when you might have less enthusiasm. It's okay, your body needs energy to clean out ALL those organs!

MORNING OF OCTOBER 18th, 2016

As I walk by the breakfast laid out for the others, I do not feel desire. I feel excitement for my upcoming experiences, for clear, clean living, and for discipline. Morning practice flew by; I feel fantastic.

Music moves me on a deeply energetic level, I feel a purity inside my body. I devoured the yoga flow with my entire body.

Feel.

Don't be afraid if you find you are confronted with some seriously disturbing emotions. Especially on the first fast, it's common to purge pent up energy.

Instead of shying away, feed your emotional purging with some hip opening yoga poses.

Sit with discomfort. Befriend uncertainty.

Laugh.

Cry.

Listen.

EVENING OF OCTOBER 18th, 2016

Awaken, soul!

I see you, and I wish to set you free. I desire to know you.

My observer has met you briefly, and I need another taste.

Come out to play.

Light my path.

You are stardust---your brilliant soul-fire glistens within.

Perpetuating benefits.

Fasting is pretty simple in theory, but can be difficult in execution. Choose carefully when considering meals to break fast.

You can reap even more benefits if gluten and animal products are avoided for dinner, too.

Here are my favorites:

  • Baked sweet potato topped with vegan chili and 1/4 avocado
  • BBQ roasted cauliflower "wings," sauteed kale and portobello
  • Veggie stir fry with curried, pan-fried tempeh
  • Tofu scramble with lots of veggies
  • Crave sweets? Stick to: dates, apple and nut butter, citrus segments, berries, cherries, frozen grapes, melon cubes, raisins and almonds mixed with some cinnamon. Watch serving size, it's easy to go ham after a fast.

Listen.

I'm not here to preach about abstaining from food.

It's not for everybody, sure.

And it can be like, really hard for somebody that loves food as much as I do.

However, I am here to tell you that there is magic inside of you. How do you access it?

Train your brain.

Discover strength you didn't know you had.

Feel your emotions fully.

There is no limit to what you can accomplish if you take risks and open yourself to possibilities that present themselves.

Know your values and your intentions.

Seek your greater self.

You will never reach your potential without pushing outside of your comfort zone.

START TODAY!

If you begin placing one foot in front of the other, eventually you will build so much momentum that nobody can stop you from reaching your goals.

Not even yourself.

Happy fasting.

Namaste.
